The Mustard Seed
“And he said, "With what can we compare the kingdom of God, or what parable shall we use for it? It is like a grain of mustard seed, which, when sown on the ground, is the smallest of all the seeds on earth, yet when it is sown it grows up and becomes larger than all the garden plants and puts out large branches, so that the birds of the air can make nests in its shade."
Mark 4:30-32 ESV
It’s fitting that Jesus spoke about having faith as small as a mustard seed. When we think about how tiny, how almost insignificant a mustard seed is to the naked eye, we can start to understand just how small our faith truly is compared to our infinite, to our magnanimous, to our eternal God.
But once this seed is planted, secure, and fulfilling its purpose, it starts to grow. And growing takes a lot of care, a lot of nurturing, it takes serious dedication. It takes us putting our full hope in Jesus for our mustard seeds to grow into the tall and sturdy trees that he sees for us. For us to be deeply rooted in his truth, in his love, and in his light so that we cannot be snatched up from the ground in which we’re rooted. For the weeds to not over take our budding faith. For the rocks to have no possibility of crushing us. He is what sustains us.
Living water that brings more than hydration to our parched souls. This water gives us life and life to the fullest. It gives us a purpose and a plan for our lives. It gives us hope, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, and love. It brings our best out of us so that we can glorify our king in heaven. This water cleanses us from all unrighteousness and forgives us of our sins. Jesus, our living water, is what sustains us.
From faith as small as a mustard seed, through every growing pain, through every season of pruning, into a tree. Tall. Strong. Abundantly producing. Producing the fruits from labors of love. Showing the world what it looks like to be rooted in our faith. It’s a slow, time consuming, sometimes even messy process.
But that mustard seed is you, and it is me, and we have all been planted into the rich soil of the fathers love for us.
Let this be your prayer today; Heavenly Father, let us have faith as small as a mustard seed, faith that takes root, and grows into your amazing love. To be witnesses of the true life change that only your Holy Spirit can bring. Help us to remember that it is always you Jesus who sustains us. Amen.
